The A.J. McMullen Red Raiders endured one of the longest possible bus rides within the W.P.I.A.L. (77 miles) to defeat the Avella Eagles on Monday. The 37-19 victory was the eighth consecutive conference win for the Red Raiders. A.J. McMullen improved to 10-3 in the conference and 12-4 overall following this win.
The game started quietly, with the Eagles nipping at the heels of the Red Raiders. When the Eagles cut the Red Raiders’ advantage to just a point early in the second quarter, A.J. McMullen offered a new defensive look that resulted in a 15-5 run for the visitors to finish the first half. The Red Raiders didn’t look back during the third or fourth quarters, outscoring the Eagles 15-8 over the final two periods.
The Red Raiders were greatly aided throughout the game by strong defensive play from Tanner Uphold and Tyler Hawk, as well as several offensive and defensive rebounds from Braxton Swaney, Chase Murray, and Chris Baranowski. Unfortunately, Red Raiders also battled foul trouble, especially in the first half. A.J. McMullen registered eighteen fouls during the contest, including twelve in the first two quarters. However, the Eagles made just one of twelve attempts from the charity stripe during the game. The Red Raiders faired somewhat better in this category, sinking six of seventeen foul shot attempts.
Tanner Uphold and Chase Murray each scored nine points to lead the effort, with Levi Garner adding seven points. Ryley Umbel scored four points and Wade Brugger added three points. Tyler Hawk and Braxton Swaney each scored two points, while Levi Gilleland scored one point in this victory.
The A.J. 7th graders were also victorious, defeating the Eagles’ 7th graders in a fast-paced 30-17 contest. Xavier Murray led the 7th graders with ten points. Levi Gilleland added eight points in the second game, with Nick Torbich, Greydan Plume, Wade Brugger, and Riley Livingood also scoring.
The A.J. McMullen Red Raiders next host the Bethlehem-Center Bulldogs on Tuesday.
